IoT Testbed

IoT Testbeds are offering an opportunity to test and develop new services and products using IoT technology. Future by Lund's test beds aim to remove barriers and offer technologies, systems and processes ranging from physical infrastructure to digital information platforms for sharing data. Lund Open Sensing City (LOSC) is an IoT testbed that covers the entire municipality of Lund, but with some geographical limitations for specific communication technologies.

Open test bed in 5G+/6G in public environment planned

Now a project is starting where the goal is to create a test bed where actors can develop and test products based on the latest technology in mobile communication in Lund. This can be made possible by pairing Ericsson's mobile network test bed with Future by Lund's IoT testbed. The planning project has received support from Vinnova to find conditions for an open test bed for 5G and 6G in Lund and it is hoped to speed up the process for tests and pilots with new technology. Future by Lund, Ericsson, Kraftringen and Sensative are participating in the project, but talks have already begun with several other partners.

SOM II, sub-project: Finding parking spaces with sensors

In the autumn of 2020, a project was started in the parking house Färgaren in Lund, in which some of the parking spaces were connected using sensors. The sensors measured whether the parking space was vacant or not and then reported further. In the future, this could give those looking for parking real-time information about available parking spaces in apps or on websites.

LOSC: Smart office system platform for various projects at IKDC

Nimway is Sony's smart office system and within the large flow and mobility project Lund Open Sensing City (LOSC) it was installed in 2019 at Ingvar Kamprad Design Center (IKDC) at LTH. Then came the pandemic, and both the measurements at IKDC and the utility of the office system became partly different from what was first thought. Here Fredrik Karlsson at Nimway talks about how the office system continues to exist at IKDC to form the basis for research, but also about how Nimway proved to fit well with the new habits created by the pandemic and how the system can now provide companies with data for informed decisions about future offices.

LOSC - Large project connecting traffic flows is carried out in Lund

Lund Municipality is granted SEK 5.9 million from Vinnova to implement the project Lund Open Sensing City. Lund Open Sensing City will create an open test bed for the future real-time controlled society where people, organizations, infrastructure and sensor systems work together to create a sustainable environment with high quality of life.

ASIN: Smart solutions for public environments

The Smart Public Environments I (SOM I) project was a preliminary study of how to strengthen the ability of Lund and Malmö municipalities to use innovative IoT solutions to develop and streamline public environments. The goal was also to investigate how to create a testing arena for the Swedish IoT industry. The work of measuring flows of people and vehicles around Lund Central Station and personalised lighting at a nursing home in Malmö were used as two experiments, mainly in the tank, to prepare the organisations for the work with the new technology.

SOM II: Smart Public Environments

Imagine if the bin could tell you when it's full, if you could sit at home and see if the vegetables in the grow plot need watering, or if city planners could easily follow which paths cyclists prefer. This and much more was investigated in Smart Public Environments II (SOM II) through connected sensors in a free and open network in Lund and Malmö. The project aimed to find the benefits of new smart technologies in municipal operations and public environments and to implement innovative solutions to the challenges that exist. Another goal was to find opportunities to test entrepreneurs and companies' innovative solutions to public operations. Within the project, more than twenty sub-projects were carried out and a new agile project implementation model was tested with very good results.

OCSN - Open City Sensor Network

In the spring of 2017, Lund installed a wireless LoRa network that allowed free experimentation with sensors and the collection of environmental data. The network was one of the first free and open communication networks for IoT and sensor solutions, and everyone from sensor-interested individuals and students to companies at a pre-commercial stage could freely try innovative solutions in Lund's own Internet of Things.

LOSC, sub-project: Sony's smart office system becomes living lab at IKDC

In autumn 2020, Nimway — Sony's smart office system — will be installed at the Ingvar Kamprad Design Centre at LTH. The system is intended to be used partly as the office system it is, but also as a platform for various research projects at IKDC. By connecting different sensors, completely new solutions can be created by the creative students. The collaboration is part of the large flow and mobility project Lund Open Sensing City.

LOSC/FLOW, sub-project: How does street design affect vehicle speed?

How can we take advantage of new technologies to better understand where roads should be built and how they should be designed? This is explored in the LOSC project, for example by Smarta Byar testing a radar that measures speed along Dörrödsvägen in Veberöd. In this way, traffic flow can be measured continuously over a long period of time. The radar captures movements at 180 degrees and can tell the difference between pedestrians or vehicles passing by. The experiments are carried out in collaboration with Smart Villages, among others, to create a basis for future traffic decisions.

SOM II, sub-project: Heat metering in the city

‍ Hot summer days can pose a danger to sensitive people, such as children and the elderly. Urban environments tend to be warmer than environments in the surrounding landscape, and in some urban environments, known as heat islands, it gets extra hot. In an innovation project, the municipality of Lund in 2021 has started measuring temperatures in some selected locations in order to create knowledge for further work on locating these heat islands.

SOM II, Sub-project: Aid to SMEs

An important part of the SOM project has been to help SMEs with test environments in public activities — and of course allowing public environments to benefit from new technologies and new applications. SMEs at different stages have been supported with varying efforts on the part of the project — as some contractors only need help with contacts, others with test surfaces or other development opportunities. Therefore, working with SMEs has involved everything from closing further activities to preparing space for the activities in the various sub-projects. Here we give some examples of activities within our SME track where the activity is not part of a common sub-project.

SOM II, sub-project: IoT in school teaching

The SOM project leaders met with teachers and students from upper secondary schools in Lund and Malmö to work together on how to create an early interest among students in working with sensors. One hope was to produce material that could be disseminated to technology teachers in the future. “This is a way for us to get ideas and views from new users on how an IoT platform should work, but also a way to ensure that skills are supplied to the industry in Lund and Malmö,” said Peter Bårmann at Sensative.

SOM II, sub-project: Korna's waterho gets smart

It is not only people in a city who can benefit from sensors — even for cows in a pasture on the outskirts of Veberöd, new technology can be of great importance. This shows the experiment that Smart Villages has done with sensors that alert if the water runs out in the cows' water supply — and in the purchase it has provided new knowledge about the cows' water habits.

SOM II, Sub-project: Teaching IoT Technology

“It works like the song of birds — although many birds sing at the same time, you can make out each species separately”. This is how Anders Hedberg from Sensefarm described how the myriad of sensor signals in a network can still find the right computer to communicate with. During the Smart city testbed workshop conducted on several occasions in 2017, participants had the opportunity to pair sensors with a computer and see how it might work.

SOM II, sub-project: 3D model of smart village

Through a 3D model of a community, residents would be able to report faults to the local authority, look at houses to be built and see how the water flows in the pipes under the street. Perhaps they could also take a step into the model and play games or have meetings with people for cultural exchange. Smart Villages in Veberöd started a visualisation project in 2019 as part of the SOM project. The work showed great opportunities and in 2021, Smarta Byar offers several higher education institutions to use the village of Veberöd and the digital twin in their teaching — something that can give the village knowledge about how to increase sustainability through sensors.

SOM II, subproject: Historical tree gets connected

For over 150 years, the former beech tree stood in the courtyard of the Cathedral School and in December 2019 a new one was planted. The tree is historic — not only because it is an important symbol of the school, but also because it is the first large tree that Lund Municipality chose to monitor with buried moisture sensors. The technology of sensor monitoring of trees has been developed in Lund as part of the SOM project.

SOM II, sub-project: Travel habits - data integration

In autumn 2020, volunteer Lunds could participate in a new survey on travel habits. It was Trivector and Future by Lund who again collected data through the TravelVu app. There were several purposes for the investigation. One was to understand how to travel in the new district of Brunnshög, one was to follow up on the municipality's objectives, one was to be able to design the transport system to meet the needs of travellers. Finally, they also wanted to compare how the data from the TravelVu app is consistent with the traditional point measurement.

SOM II, sub-project: Air quality measurement by bicycle

In December 2019, an air particle measurement was started in Lund via bicycle. Five cyclists were each fitted with a Snifferbike sensor that reported values displayed on a map during the cycle ride. The sensor is put on the bike handlebars and as the data was collected it was given an idea of the status of the air in different places in Lund. The project was part of Future by Lund's advent calendar, which aimed to raise awareness of the benefits sensors can bring. The values were displayed in real time publicly via a website.

LOSC/FLOW, sub-project: Lund tests smart technology for better anti-slip

When there is a winter road race in Lund, the Service Administration must be prepared and go out and combat slipping on roads as well as pedestrian and bicycle lanes. Decisions about when it is time have previously been based on data from three weather stations. In an innovation project, data from many different sources will be merged to provide a much more detailed picture of the slip state, which can provide both safer and cheaper anti-slip protection in the future. At the same time, this is an attempt to test how a smart city platform can provide the municipality with a better basis for decision-making.

LOSC/Flow, sub-project: Innovation projects measure traffic

How to use sensors to measure traffic? Partners within Future by Lund have tried this in several innovation projects in recent years. In a project in Södra Sandby, we are testing combining data from AFRYS image sensors, Trivector's app TravelVu and Acconeer's radar sensor with, for example, weather data from SMHI. In this way, we hope to create a more comprehensive and at the same time more cost-effective factual basis for traffic planners. Watch the video that shows how we work in the test project!

Lund Municipality: The connected football field provides strength at grassroots level

At Linero in Lund, a way was tried to make the grass on the football field more durable and at the same time less demanding on water than normal. The municipality of Lund is carrying out a project in which biochar was dug into an existing plot with natural grass. In order to be able to see how much less water the new kind of football field needs, the municipality has now also placed moisture sensors in the ground.

SOM II, sub-project: Parcel logistics in the city

Imagine if your parcel deliveries came to an outdoor box near your residence. Perhaps it would mean that it became such a short distance so you could walk instead of taking the car to collect and maybe it would suit you better to do so after a regular drop-off point's closing time. It is Dipp-R that developed this new concept for managing “the last mile” of logistics chains in e-commerce. Within the SOM project, in collaboration with Malmö University, they made a simulation of what this logistics solution could mean in the residential area Västra Hamnen in Malmö.

SOM II, Sub-project: Monitoring of charging points

On an unusually beautiful day in early October 2020, some of the participants in the SOM project met at Mårtenstorget in Lund to connect modules with radar sensors at two of the charging points for electric cars. With this, it is possible to determine remotely whether the parking space is occupied by a car parked without charging.

SOM II, sub-project: Smart cycling data provides completely new knowledge for traffic planners

Which route do Lund's cyclists choose and do they think their bike path feels safe? In September 2018, nearly 500 Lund cyclists participated in a project where new technology created a better basis for both traffic planning and research. The results were shown at the International Transport Conference in Copenhagen.

SOM II, subproject, Testbed: “A living lab for IoT”

Behind all of our smart solutions where IoT is used to make residents' lives better, several technologies are hidden, all of which have their own special advantages. In the SOM project in Lund, they gather in a common test bed. “It is a living lab for IoT that is run in a very collaborative way,” said Mats Pettersson from Sensative.

SOM II, sub-project: Smart waste management

One of the first sub-projects of the SOM project explored how IoT can be used to transform the waste industry. The company Bintel tested whether sensors can be used to position municipal garbage containers and also to make level measurements in garbage bins. There were also experiments with four-compartment vessels in Helsingborg — all in order to make future garbage disposal more environmentally friendly.

SOM II, sub-project: Green space management

With the help of connected sensors, it is possible to monitor that the tomatoes and summer flowers are given the correct temperature, amount of water and humidity from a distance. A project in Lund and Malmö investigated whether sensors can be used to provide healthier plants, higher yields and saved money for the municipality. After the project, the technology was used in conjunction with Lund Municipality planting a large tree in the Katedralskolan school yard.
