Den 4 juni är det dags igen för Unexpected – ett internationellt innovationsforum där konst, vetenskap, näringsliv, kreativa näringar och filosofi möts för att forma framtiden. Den fjärde juni 2025 återvänder Unexpected - Art and science forum - till Mejeriet i Lund. Första tillfället var 2023 och då lockades forskare, politiker, tjänstemän och entreprenörer från hela Europa att vara med och bidra i pågående innovationsprocesser inom olika områden. Denna gång är utgångspunkten de fyra spåren ”Valuedriven development”, ”Performing arts and cross innovation”, ”Archeology and immersive tech” samt ”Fashion and craft”.
- Kreativa egenskaper hos människor, organisationer och team leder inte enbart till att man kan skapa ett kreativt innehåll, som kläder eller en föreställning, säger Lars Mattiasson, projektledare för Unexpected. Kreativa förmågor har också en påverkan på tillverkningen och produktionen av innehållet, det vill säga även den teknik som används. Kan man hitta sätt att mixa de olika kompetenserna är det lättare att komma till framtidens mer hållbara produktionslinjer.
I Unexpected kommer de kulturella och kreativa näringarnas (KKN) innovationsförmåga att lyftas. (Vi använder här KKN men ser det som i stort sett synonymt till kulturella och kreativa sektorer, KKS, och kulturella och kreativa branscher, KKB.)
- Vi kommer att prata om hur man kan göra när kreativa näringar skapar något helt nytt, till exempel tillsammans med tech, säger Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth, Lunds universitet. Vi har flera exempel i Lund där de kreativa näringarna använder befintliga tekniska komponenter för att mejsla ut något som inte gjorts förr. Det vi vill visa upp är samskapandet mellan olika discipliner där de kreativa är med och driver innovationen. Det kan till exempel vara inom modeindustrin, inom arkeologi eller när man skapar digitala upplevelser av livemusik.
Unexpected utforskar hur man kan använda tvärinnovation med de kulturella och kreativa näringarna som en bas för att bygga innovationsportföljer.
- Sedan förra gången vi arrangerade Unexpected har vi tagit arbetet ett steg till och kan nu visa att innovationsportföljerna vi skapat faktiskt är investeringsbara, för allt från ekonomiska investeringar till att gå in med teknikresurser, tid och att stoppa in aktiviteten i ett samarbetsinitiativ, fortsätter Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth. Det gör det möjligt för forskare, entreprenörer och bolag att stiga in och vara en del av ett lagarbete.
Utöver de fyra innovationsspåren kommer det att bli tillfälle att diskutera vad det innebär att jobba med innovation med den kreativa branschen som utgångspunkt. Det handlar också om hur man kan arbeta med existentiell hållbarhet i en öppen innovationsprocess, vilket görs bland annat genom IPA-projektet. Dessutom blir det en chans att påverka rekommendationer för framtidens policyer för branschen inom EU. Detta görs under dagen genom en policycorner men också dagen efter, den 5 juni, genom att policylabb (möjlighet att anmäla kommer längre fram). Den här möjligheten hänger ihop med ekip-projektet, det stora europeiska policyprojektet som leds från Lund.
- Unexpected kommer vara ett internationellt event, bland annat tack vare att ekip träffas i Lund under samma vecka, berättar Birgitta Persson, Future by Lund. Vi har forskare och aktörer från hela Europa på plats. Det är en unik möjlighet att träffas och bygga internationella kontakter. Vi hoppas locka besökare med specialintresse inom tex mode och hantverk men som också vill göra resan för att se hur man kan arbeta tillsammans med innovation utifrån kulturella och kreativa näringar.
Arenan för Unexpected blir även denna gång Mejeriet.
- Klubbscenen och miljön på Mejeriet är en mycket bra utgångspunkt för Unexpected, menar Lars Mattiasson. Det är viktigt med känslan att ingen hör hemma där, därför hör alla dit. Vi vill skapa det gemensamma och lokalen blir en katalysator som skapar gränsöverskridande samtal.

Unexpected – Innovation Forum for a Creative Tomorrow
On June 4th, it is once again time for Unexpected – an international innovation forum where art, science, business, creative industries, and philosophy meet to shape the future. During the day, there will be opportunities to dive into themes such as fashion, archaeology, performing arts, and technology, as well as to influence future policies within the creative industries and build innovation ecosystems for a more inclusive and resilient tomorrow.

On June 4th, 2025, Unexpected – Art and Science Forum – returns to Mejeriet in Lund. The first event took place in 2023 and attracted researchers, politicians, civil servants, and entrepreneurs from across Europe to contribute to ongoing innovation processes in various fields. This time, the foundation will be the four tracks “Value-driven development,” “Performing arts and cross-innovation,” “Archaeology and immersive tech,” and “Fashion and craft.”
- Creative qualities in people, organizations, and teams do not only enable the creation of creative content, such as clothing or a performance, says Lars Mattiasson, project manager for Unexpected. Creative abilities also impact the manufacturing and production of content, meaning the technology used as well. If we can find ways to mix different competencies, it becomes easier to develop the sustainable production lines of the future.
At Unexpected, the innovation capacity of the cultural and creative industries (CCI) will be highlighted. (Here, we use CCI but consider it largely synonymous with cultural and creative sectors, CCS, and cultural and creative businesses, CCB.)
- We will talk about how creative industries can create something entirely new, for example, together with tech, says Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth, Lund University. We have several examples in Lund where the creative industries use existing technical components to carve out something that has never been done before. What we want to showcase is the co-creation between different disciplines where the creatives are actively driving innovation. This can, for example, be in the fashion industry, in archaeology, or when creating digital experiences of live music.
Unexpected explores how cross-innovation can use cultural and creative industries as a base for building innovation portfolios.
- Since the last time we organized Unexpected, we have taken the work one step further and can now show that the innovation portfolios we have created are actually investable, for everything from financial investments to bring in technology resources, time, and incorporating the activity into a collaborative initiative, continues Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth. This makes it possible for researchers, entrepreneurs, and companies to step in and be part of a teamwork effort.
Beyond the four innovation tracks, there will also be opportunities to discuss what it means to work with innovation with the creative industry as a foundation. It is also about how to work with existential sustainability in an open innovation process, which is done, among other things, through the IPA project. Furthermore, there will be a chance to influence recommendations for future policies for the industry within the EU. This will take place during the event through a policy corner, as well as the day after, on June 5, through a policy lab (information will come later). This opportunity is connected to EKIP, the major European policy project led from Lund.
- Unexpected will be an international event, partly thanks to EKIP gathering in Lund during the same week, says Birgitta Persson, Future by Lund. We have researchers and actors from all over Europe on site. It is a unique opportunity to meet and build international connections. We hope to attract visitors with a special interest in, for example, fashion and craftsmanship but who also want to make the journey to see how one can work together with innovation based on cultural and creative industries.
The venue for Unexpected will once again be Mejeriet.
- The club stage and the environment at Mejeriet provide a very good foundation for Unexpected, says Lars Mattiasson. It is important to create a feeling that no one belongs there, and therefore, everyone does. We want to create a sense of community, and the venue becomes a catalyst that fosters cross-disciplinary conversations.
